India has allocated ₹20,000 crore in Budget 2025–26 for Small Modular Reactor (SMR) R&D, aiming for five operational SMRs by 2033. Nuclear capacity targets include 100GW by 2047.
“SMRs can be deployed faster and closer to demand centres,” a Department of Atomic Energy official said. Analysts see India aligning with U.S., Canada, and China.
Challenges remain around waste, liability, and financing. But SMRs could be India’s path to clean baseload power.
