Gulf Suppliers Cut Crude Sales to Russian-Backed Indian Refiner

India’s Nayara Energy has cut refinery operations to 70-80% capacity after Saudi Aramco and Iraq’s state oil company SOMO suspended crude supplies following European Union sanctions targeting the Russian-backed facility. The 400,000 barrel-per-day Vadinar refinery, majority-owned by Rosneft, has lost its traditional 3 million barrels monthly from Gulf suppliers and now relies entirely on Russian crude. The supply halt follows EU sanctions imposed in July as part of the bloc’s 18th sanctions package against Russian energy assets. Saudi Aramco and SOMO suspended deliveries to avoid sanctions exposure, severing established commercial relationships with one of India’s largest private refiners. The final Saudi shipment of Arab Light crude arrived July 18 aboard the VLCC Georgios, while th...

BPCL’s hydrogen pivot signals a new phase for India’s refining giant

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) posted a stronger-than-expected profit in the first quarter of FY26, with net earnings of ₹61.24 billion against market estimates closer to ₹57 billion. Softer crude costs and improved marketing spreads underpinned the numbers, but management is keen to highlight a different narrative: the company’s accelerating bet on green hydrogen. BPCL has begun pilot projects to produce hydrogen for refinery desulphurisation and has partnered with KPIT and the Kerala government on India’s first hydrogen bus corridor. “Hydrogen-powered mobility is the future of sustainable transportation,” Chairman G. Krishnakumar told reporters in Kochi, underscoring the ambition to leapfrog conventional gas. The strategy mirrors Europe’s majors. Repsol in Spain and Italy’...

IOC Plans India’s Largest Green Hydrogen Plant at Panipat

By Newscript News Network August 20, 2025 Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) will build India’s largest green hydrogen facility at Panipat, targeting 10,000 tonnes/year by December 2027. The ₹2 trillion refinery hydrogen programme aims to decarbonise refining and create clean fuel markets. “This will be a defining moment,” said IOC Chairman S.M. Vaidya. Analysts noted IOC’s leadership puts it ahead of peers BPCL and HPCL, aligning with global majors like Aramco. Challenges include electrolyser costs and infrastructure gaps, but the project is seen as a national model for large-scale hydrogen integration.
