Coal India Gains from Tax Overhaul

September’s GST restructuring delivered unexpected relief for India’s coal sector. While raising the base rate from 5% to 18%, the government eliminated a ₹400 per tonne cess, creating a net reduction of ₹180 per tonne from September 22. Coal India, which supplies 80% of domestic production, stands to benefit most from improved price competitiveness against imports. The state miner produced 703mn tonnes in FY2024 while India imported 261mn tonnes, primarily higher-grade coal for steel production and thermal generation. The reform reflects New Delhi’s balancing act between climate commitments and energy security. Coal still generates 70% of India’s electricity, and demand continues rising alongside industrial expansion. Rather than accelerating coal’s decline, the government chose to ...

By Team Newscript August 9, 2025 India’s Coal Dependence Endures Despite Renewables Growth Coal remains India’s dominant source of electricity, supplying roughly 73 per cent of daily generation, especially during evening peaks when solar output fades. Rapid EV adoption is adding new demand pressure, underscoring the urgent need for large-scale storage and hybrid renewable projects. While policymakers have set aggressive decarbonisation targets, the grid’s reliance on coal for stability persists. Investment in battery systems and pumped hydro remains modest relative to requirement, raising questions over the pace of transition. Analysts note that without accelerated storage deployment, the coal fleet—already one of the largest in the world—will continue to anchor India’s energy sec...

By Team Newscript August 8, 2025 India Energy News Oil India–IREL MoU: a strategic bet on rare earths Oil India Ltd (OIL) has signed an MoU with IREL (India) Ltd to co-develop critical minerals and rare earths, a move that dovetails with New Delhi’s push to de-risk clean-tech supply chains. The tie-up signals an intent to move beyond upstream hydrocarbons into strategic ores used in magnets, EVs and wind turbines. While commercial terms weren’t disclosed, the ministries that oversee the firms (Petroleum & Natural Gas; Atomic Energy) position this as part of the national critical minerals mission. Expect joint work on exploration, beneficiation and processing—areas where India seeks to compress learning curves historically dominated by China. Oyster Renewables: ₹16,000 ...

Coal PSUs Turn Minelands Green with Afforestation Drive

By Newscript News Network August 20,2025  Coal and lignite PSUs have planted 29 million saplings on 13,400 hectares of mined land over six years, targeting 16,000 hectares by 2030. Methods include Miyawaki forests, drone planting, and seed-ball broadcasting. “This is about leaving a positive footprint where coal has been extracted,” said a Coal India official. Communities are benefiting from biodiversity and water recharge. Critics say plantations can’t offset emissions, but the initiative shows PSUs’ ESG sensitivity.

By Team Newscript Power Demand and Monsoon Slowdown India’s electricity demand softened in the first quarter of FY26 as an early monsoon tempered consumption across industrial and residential sectors. Major private utilities — Tata Power, Adani Power, and JSW Energy — reported declines of 1.3–1.6% in Q1 demand, a reversal from the 11% surge seen in the same quarter last year. The slowdown comes after two consecutive years of above-average growth, driven by post-pandemic recovery and prolonged summer heatwaves. Analysts say the early onset of monsoon rains in June cooled peak-hour loads and reduced air-conditioning demand. While the short-term dip eases strain on the grid, utilities warn that reduced dispatch volumes could compress margins. Demand is expected to recover in Q3 as ag...

Coal India unleashes Rs25 lakh worker bonanza as mining giant tightens grip on talent war

Coal India, the world’s largest coal producer, has announced a comprehensive enhancement of employee benefits as the state-controlled mining giant seeks to retain talent amid India’s expanding energy demands. The company will implement new uniform policies whilst significantly increasing ex-gratia payments for workers from Rs15 lakh to Rs25 lakh, marking a 67 per cent increase in compensation. The benefit enhancement comes as Coal India faces mounting pressure to maintain production levels whilst addressing workforce retention challenges. The state miner, which controls approximately 70 per cent of India’s coal production, has been grappling with skilled labour shortages across its mining operations in eastern India. Industry analysts suggest the move reflects broader competitive pre...
