NTPC — incremental but relentless march into green

The latest step in NTPC’s green expansion is modest on paper: a 50 MW solar addition at Bhuj, Gujarat, commissioned on 24 August. But the detail matters: it pushes total installed capacity to 83,341 MW and demonstrates cadence in execution.

Behind the scenes, New Delhi has widened NTPC’s purse strings. The government has delegated investment powers up to ₹20,000 crore for renewable energy projects. This trims approval delays and aligns with the utility’s ambition of 60 GW renewable capacity by 2032.

Storage is the other piece. Subsidiary THDC India has brought Unit II (250 MW) of the Tehri pumped storage project into commercial operation, following Unit I in June. Officials note it is India’s first variable-speed facility, critical for balancing renewable intermittency. “Storage will be the spine of integration,” said a Ministry of Power official.

The 49th AGM is scheduled for August 29. Investors will parse the integrated report not just for financials but for clarity on project returns in an environment of falling module prices and stressed discom payments.
