GR Infraprojects has won a contract to evacuate 2.5GW of renewable power in Madhya Pradesh, marking one of the largest transmission awards in recent years. The project, awarded under tariff-based competitive bidding, involves building transmission lines and substations to connect new solar and wind farms to the national grid.

The award reflects a critical bottleneck in India’s renewable push. While capacity additions in solar and wind have accelerated, transmission infrastructure has often lagged, leaving gigawatts stranded. The Madhya Pradesh project is intended to prevent such curtailment by synchronising supply with demand centres in northern and western India.

GR Infraprojects, better known for highways and civil infrastructure, has been steadily expanding into power transmission. Winning such a large order puts it in the league of specialists like Sterlite Power and Adani Transmission. Analysts say the diversification makes strategic sense, as India’s renewable integration demands tens of billions in new transmission spending.

Execution risks are substantial. Land acquisition for transmission corridors remains fraught with delays, and project timelines are notoriously hard to maintain. Yet the shift in policy toward competitive bidding has brought greater efficiency compared with the past dominance of state utilities.

The Madhya Pradesh contract signals confidence in private players’ ability to deliver. If successful, it could set the stage for GR Infraprojects to become a significant player in power evacuation, complementing its road portfolio.

As India targets 500GW of non-fossil capacity by 2030, transmission projects like this will determine whether renewable ambitions translate into reliable power delivery. For GR Infraprojects, the contract is both an opportunity and a test of whether it can extend its execution prowess into an entirely new sector.
