BPCL’s $1.19 Billion Green Energy Pivot

State-run Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) is investing ₹10,029 crore ($1.19 billion) to build a 2 GW renewables portfolio by 2025, scaling to 10 GW by 2035, alongside a network of 7,000 electric vehicle chargers nationwide. The pivot marks one of the most ambitious green transitions by a traditional oil refiner. “Energy security in India is about diversification,” said G. Krishnakumar, BPCL chairman and managing director. “We are aligning our capital expenditure with India’s clean energy ambitions.” BPCL’s strategy builds on India’s broader $109.5 billion power infrastructure expansion, weaving renewables into existing refining and distribution assets. The company is repositioning itself as a dual-energy provider—supplying both clean fuels and digital energy services. To f...

Energy News Brief

India added 30GW of renewable capacity in the first nine months of 2025, lifting the total to 226GW and keeping the country on track for its 2030 goals. Officials expect a further 39–43GW by year-end, a pace that places India among the fastest-growing clean-energy markets globally. The 500GW ambition, once treated as overreach, now looks achievable. Solar leads the additions, with wind and hydro reinforcing growth across key states. Analysts cite clearer policy, faster approvals and cheaper technology, alongside deeper private-sector participation in utility-scale projects. Bihar moves early with a 24GW plan Bihar approved a policy targeting 23,968MW of new capacity and 6.1GWh of storage, offering fiscal incentives, single-window clearances and carbon-credit facilitation. Officials se...

Solar Energy’s Dominance in India’s $11.8 Billion Clean Power Boom

India attracted $11.8 billion in renewable energy investments in the first half of 2025, according to the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA). The figure is the second-highest half-year inflow on record, underscoring the country’s accelerating pivot to clean power. Solar energy alone captured 77 per cent of the inflows, a reflection of its scale and the steady returns promised by government auctions. “Solar has emerged as the lowest-cost and most bankable option for India’s energy transition,” said Vibhuti Garg, South Asia Director at IEEFA. “Investor appetite is strong because policy and revenue frameworks are increasingly predictable.” The government awarded 59 GW of renewable capacity in 2024, much of it solar, and plans to double capacity by 2030. Weekly Energy Brief : September 1- September 7

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY India’s energy system showed resilience amid geopolitical stress. The U.S. 50% tariff shock was offset by Russia’s ~$7/bbl discount, sustaining flows through a ~6 mb/d shadow market while the Indian crude basket hovered near $70.71/bbl; pump prices in Delhi stayed broadly steady. Policy tailwinds accelerated the transition: ALMM List-II became mandatory for solar tenders, and a forthcoming GST reset cuts rates on renewable components to 5% while lifting coal/lignite to 18%, sharpening clean-power economics. Renewables reached 237 GW, with H1-2025 clean generation at ~236 TWh (+20% y/y); domestic module capacity now exceeds 100 GW. Corporates advanced green hydrogen, storage, and ammonia projects, as regulators tightened ESG: SEBI’s value-chain reporting is voluntary in ...

GAIL stabilises volumes and looks abroad for LNG diversity

GAIL (India) Ltd reported higher quarterly profit on the back of steady transmission volumes and improved trading margins. Industrial demand for gas has held up better than feared, even as spot LNG prices remained volatile. The company’s mantra, executives say, is simple: move molecules first, seek arbitrage second. Centre Scraps Renewable Pricing Pools to Unlock Faster Power Deals

By Newscript News Network August 20, 2025 In a significant policy reversal, the Ministry of Power has scrapped the central renewable energy pricing pools established in February 2024. The pools, designed to aggregate tariffs for solar and hybrid projects, were intended to simplify procurement. Instead, developers complained they slowed contract closures. By dismantling the centralised mechanism, the government is giving developers and buyers more freedom to negotiate bilateral power purchase agreements (PPAs). “This will allow deals to be structured faster and on more competitive terms,” said an official from the Solar Developers Association. For developers, the policy shift reduces administrative bottlenecks that often delayed projects by months. Analysts believe the move coul...

Gulf Suppliers Cut Crude Sales to Russian-Backed Indian Refiner

India’s Nayara Energy has cut refinery operations to 70-80% capacity after Saudi Aramco and Iraq’s state oil company SOMO suspended crude supplies following European Union sanctions targeting the Russian-backed facility. The 400,000 barrel-per-day Vadinar refinery, majority-owned by Rosneft, has lost its traditional 3 million barrels monthly from Gulf suppliers and now relies entirely on Russian crude. The supply halt follows EU sanctions imposed in July as part of the bloc’s 18th sanctions package against Russian energy assets. Saudi Aramco and SOMO suspended deliveries to avoid sanctions exposure, severing established commercial relationships with one of India’s largest private refiners. The final Saudi shipment of Arab Light crude arrived July 18 aboard the VLCC Georgios, while th...

ONGC Fights the Crude Reality Check

ONGC’s latest results presented a mixed picture for investors. Standalone net profit fell 10.2% to ₹8,024 crore in the June quarter, reflecting weaker crude prices that dropped from $83.05 to $66.13 per barrel year-on-year. Revenues from oil declined, and earnings per share at ₹6.38 came in below analyst expectations. The consolidated numbers told a different story. Net profit across the group rose 18.2% to ₹11,552 crore, supported by stronger natural gas realisations and incremental output from new wells, particularly offshore. Higher government-administered gas prices boosted revenues, partly offsetting the crude decline. Shareholders reacted positively despite the headline fall. ONGC’s stock rose 1.27%, suggesting confidence in the company’s long-term production strategy. The ...

Power Grid Corporation — the plumbing behind the power boom

By Newscript News Network  August 25, 2025 In August, Power Grid Corporation of India switched on the Khavda Pooling Station-3, a node that will funnel vast amounts of renewable electricity from Gujarat’s desert park to the grid. The COD on 4 August, and regulatory clearance on 18 August, make it a keystone for India’s renewable expansion. The company’s board has cleared a ₹5,000 crore bond issue with 10-year maturity, to be listed on BSE and NSE. Funding flexibility is crucial as transmission corridors and HVDC projects multiply. Adding to this, S&P upgraded POWERGRID to BBB from BBB-, following the sovereign uplift. The agency cited strong stand-alone metrics, though the cap remains sovereign-linked. Executives say this should ease spreads just as the company leans into c...

Indian Refiners Resume Russian Oil Purchases despite US Tariff Pressure

India’s state-owned refiners have resumed Russian crude purchases for September delivery, prioritising commercial benefits over mounting diplomatic pressure from Washington. Indian Oil Corporation and Bharat Petroleum Corporation secured Russian Urals crude at $3-per-barrel discounts for September and October shipments. The companies had paused purchases in July when price differentials narrowed but recommenced buying as commercial terms improved. The procurement restart occurs despite US President Donald Trump’s 25% additional tariff on Indian goods, imposed August 27 to penalise India’s continued energy trade with Russia. The levy specifically targets Delhi’s Russian oil imports, which have provided India with $12.6 billion in savings over 39 months. IOC has expanded its Russian...
